WOLVES: EUROPEAN FOOTBALL IN SERIOUS DOUBT

European football is in serious doubt for Wolverhampton Wanderers next season after they were thumped 5-1 by defending champions Manchester City in the Premier League. The rescheduled league encounter played at the Molineux saw Kevin De Bruyne score four goals to lead his team to a big win at the expense of the home team.

Wolves began the season with three straight defeats in the league under new manager Bruno Lage who had replaced compatriot NunoEspirito Santo. Ex-FC Porto goalkeeper Espirito Santo took the Tottenham Hotspur job almost immediately after leaving the Wolves job and he spent some months in North London before being fired on the back of a series of poor results in the league. Spurs turned to a serial winner in Antonio Conte to replace the sacked Espirito Santo. For Portuguese tactician Lage, the former Benfica boss was able to turn things around to lead Wolves into contention for Champions League football.

MANCHESTER UNITED TARGETING A CENTRAL DEFENDER THIS SUMMER

The Manchester Evening News understands United held exploratory discussions with the representatives of Antonio Rudiger, out of contract in Chelsea at the summer, but there is little expectation of the Germany international joining them.

Sources close to the player are more focused on discussing potential contracts with clubs guaranteed of playing in the Champions League next season. Although United are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, their next three fixtures are away at Liverpool and Arsenal, as well as Chelsea at home.

UNITED: ARSENAL MOVE FOUR POINTS CLEAR

North London giants Arsenal have moved four points clear of Manchester United in the race to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League at the end of the season after they beat hosts Aston Villa at the weekend.

Arsenal began the weekend in fourth place and with a one-point lead over Manchester United. They had the chance to move four points clear of United with an away win over Aston Villa with the Red Devils not in league action. Manchester United were not in league action over the weekend due to the FA Cup commitments of opponents Liverpool. The Premier League clash between hosts Liverpool and Manchester United have now been rescheduled for next month.

UNITED TARGET TOP-FOUR BOOST AGAINST HAMMERS

The top-four is clearly the target for Manchester United in the Premier League season and they can receive a boost in this quest by beating West Ham United this weekend with the Hammers also having the same target of finishing as one of the first four teams in the English top flight this season. Manchester United began the season as a genuine title contender until things fell apart under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who paid the price with his job. The ex-Norwegian national team striker was immediately replaced with a caretaker manager in Michael Carrick who was one of his assistants before German tactician Ralf Rangnick was appointed as the interim manager until the end of the season.

Manchester United got back to winning ways in league terms with the 3-1 win at the home of London team Brentford in a rescheduled game. The Red Devils had a shaky first half and they could have been behind at the break. Second half was a different ball game for Manchester United as they imposed themselves more on the game and got their reward with three goals. Swedish attacker Anthony Elanga scored the first goal for Manchester United on the occasion of his second league start before England international Mason Greenwood added a second goal. Marcus Rashford then came off the bench to score the third and final United goal. Ivan Toney scored the last goal of the game in the colours of Brentford.

MAGUIRE RESPONDS WITH TWO GOALS

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has responded to his critics with two goals in two games for his national team. The central defender has come under serious criticisms in the last one week due to his poor performances for Manchester United in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Maguire returned from a short-term injury layoff to take his place in the Manchester United squad for the away game against Leicester City in the Premier League shortly after last month’s international break and he was one of the major culprits as the Red Devils were beaten 4-2 by the FA Cup champions. In the following Premier League game,Maguireleft-back Luke Shaw were strongly criticised for their respective roles during the 5-0 defeat suffered at home at the hands of arch rivals Liverpool.

FRED, CAVANI FOR ATALANTA SQUAD

The South American duo of Fred and EdinsonCavani are expected to return to the Manchester United squad when they take on Italian team Atalanta in a crucial Champions League clash on Wednesday night. The two players missed the Premier League encounter with Leicester City on Saturday due to the commitment with their respective national teams.

Cavani and Fred were not in the Manchester United squad that lost 4-2 to home team Leicester City thus making it three games without a win on the Premier League table. The South American duo are expected to make the Red Devils squad for the home clash with Atalanta in the Champions League later this week.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed that his former side now have what it takes to give their rivals a run for their money and start competing against them for major titles starting from this season. Rooney said that United now have a squad large enough and with so much quality that their season would be regarded as a failure if they failed to win any major title at the end of the season. Rooney was speaking based on the transfer business his former employers did in the summer transfer window and according to him, they stand a huge chance to win the English Premier League title this season because of the big squad that they have which he believes is filled with talent, quality, and experience all at the same time.

Manchester United did have themselves a remarkable transfer window and it is evident enough in the fact that they completed the sufn=gs of England international winger Jadon Sancho from German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, and they followed up that huge signing by bringing France international central defender Raphael Varane from Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid weeks after the Sancho deal.

IGOR GOMES ON WEST HAM RADAR

West Ham United are in the transfer market for new players and they have been linked with a move for one of the best young attackers on the Brazilian league scene.

Sao Paulo player Igor Gomes is one of the most exciting young players in Brazil and he has been linked with a move to West Ham United as a potential replacement for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard.

UNITED TO SIGN A MIDFIELDER IF POGBA LEAVES

English Premier League giants Manchester United will reportedly sign another midfielder if they lose Paul Pogba this summer, according to reports. France international midfielder Pogba has been strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford in recent months and even though he continues to play down the rumors, they just keep on surfacing. The former Juventus star has remained an unsettled figure under Olé Gunnar Solksjær and he has continued to be tipped by his agent Mino Raiola to leave the club and move to another club.

Solskjær is a big fan of Pogba and has always declared that he will be more than glad to have the towering midfielder continue his career with the Red Devils and that he also would love to keep his star players to increase his chances of lifting titles as manager of the club. However, even though Solksjær wants to keep Pogba at the club, he still has to prepare for the worse that could happen given how unpredictable football is nowadays.

DALOT INTERESTED IN MAKING HIS MILAN LOAN PERMANENT

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot who is currently on loan at Italian Serie A giants AC Milan wants to continue his stay in Italy instead of returning to his parent club this summer. The Portugal international right-back walked through the exit door at Old Trafford last summer on a temporary loan deal that saw him spend the entirety of this season in Italy and has impressed during his stay there.

Manchester United manager Olé Gunnar Solksjær revealed that the reason behind sending the defender out on loan was so that he could go get himself some minutes on the pitch as it would have been difficult for him to always stay on the bench this season. The signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka by Solksjær posed a huge threat to Dalot’s position in the team as the former Crystal Palace defender walked straight to the starting team, putting Dalot’s place at huge risk.
